Maths

Our subject leader for Maths is Miss McPherson.

Our main aims in maths are to make our children fluent in solving calculations involving the four mathematical operations and to equip them with the tools to solve a variety of problems. Children are encouraged to see the mathematics that surrounds them every day and enjoy developing vital life skills in this subject.

Our curriculum model is primarily adapted from the White Rose schemes of learning, but has been tailored in order to meet the needs and requirements of our children and context. Learning is, by necessity, organised into distinct areas, but pupils make rich connections across mathematical ideas. They also develop mathematical skills across the curriculum in subjects such as Science, Design and Technology and PE.

In all maths lessons, we facilitate opportunities for children to engage with concepts, practice towards a high level of accuracy, and attempt fluency, problem-solving and reasoning challenges. Children are continuously challenged to explain why, to prove how they know, to convince that they are correct or to find all possible outcomes.

We use a wide range of resources to support their learning such as hundred squares, number lines, Numicon, cubes, place value cards and other small apparatus. Children are taught a range of strategies and methods to overcome problems, as detailed in our calculation policy.
